EDITH GERTRUDE BELL

On Sunday July 11, 2010, Edith Gertrude "Edie" Bell (nee Jones) formerly of Riverhurst, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully with family by her side, at Chez Nous Senior Citizen Home, in Moose Jaw, at the age of 88 years. Edith was born April 22, 1922, to Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Jones of Conquest. She received her education in Conquest and has been a Member of the United Church since 1938. She loved music all her life and was a member of both Junior and Senior Church Choirs. She sang in school activities and also did duets with her lifelong friend Geraldine Quine and also a schoolmate Duncan McMillon at local entertainments. In 1941 she went to SNS in Saskatoon and came to Riverhurst in May 1942 to teach at Pratt School. On July 6, 1943, she and Doug Bell of Riverhurst were married at her parent’s home in Conquest, Saskatchewan. In 1951 they moved into Riverhurst and started a dairy which they had for three years. Edith helped out with the farming on many aspects, from raising and caring for livestock and fowl to procuring and making preservatives for her family. Edith was an avid provider for her family to anyone that came for a visit or a meal. With raising eight daughters, there were many chores to be done and she was very successful in baking, sewing, gardening, taking time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in board games, playing cards and helping with piano lessons. Being the caring person Edith was she was called upon many times to help out at events, especially cooking turkeys for Fall Suppers. She moved to Central Butte in 2001 and then to Moose Jaw in 2002 where she resided until her death. Edith's written words to her family - "How much I loved all of them and how proud I was of all of them". Edith is predeceased by her parents Frederick and Sarah; two sisters Florence and Vivian, brother George, sister-in-law Jean, brother and sister-in-law Bob and Doris, her husband Doug of 58 years; daughter Linda; great-grandson Duncan. She will always be remembered by daughters: Jean of Moose Jaw, Mae (Gary) of Parksville, Barb (Kerry) of Moose Jaw, Marg (Cal) of Lafleche, Marion of Rocky Mountain House, Rene of Brandon and Glady of Moose Jaw; grandchildren: Annette (Rick), Kathy (Kevin), Brent (Christine), Tricia (Terry), Tammy (Shawn), Tennille, Tara (Mike), Chris (Kim), Chad (Rachelle), Dustin (fiance Sharmaine), Craig (Tiffiny), Kristan, Janelle (fiance Jamie), and Emily; great-grandchildren: Ashley, Eric, James, Luke, Kylie, Brody, Carson, Belle, Jeremy, Jasmine, Parker, Maguire, Tia, Tayla, Emily, Tanner, and Myla; nephews Billy (Lynn) and sons Darrin, Mark, Brent and their families, Jackie (Carrolyn) daughter Anne, son Keith and families of Conquest; and many other nieces and nephews.  In keeping with Edith’s wishes, cremation has taken place at Prairie Memorial Crematorium in Moose Jaw.  A Celebration of Edith’s life will be held at W.J.Jones & Son Chapel on Monday, July 19, 2010 at 11:00 am, followed by a public graveside service at the Riverhurst Cemetery, conducted by Della Ferguson.  A Memorial Tea will follow at the Riverhurst Community Hall which family and friends in the community are invited to attend.  In lieu of flowers, it is Edith’s wish to have donations made to the Sask. Heart & Stroke Foundation, 279 3rd Ave. N., Saskatoon, S7K 2H8, or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St.W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2. In living memory of Edith, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by Prairie Memorial Funeral Home, Chaplin, Saskatchewan.

I so enjoyed keeping in touch with your Mom all these years with b'day & Christmas cards. Most of all Wayne & I are so glad we made the trip a year ago to see your Mom.
