ARTHUR LAVERNE BENDER

June 19, 1935 – May 5, 2010

Art (Chubby) passed away peacefully with family by his side at the General Hospital in Regina. Art is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean. His children: Terry (Edith), Brenda, Victor, Susan (Rick), Patricia, Doug (Jan), Jaquline (Keith); 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and his buddy Cuddles; his siblings: Janet (Keith), LaRoyd (Lynn), Ron (Rosalie), Leon (Elaine), Stewart, Mary Lou, Linda (Bill) and their families from Ontario; and 5 brothers and sisters-in-law and their families also from Ontario.  Art was predeceased by his parents Ervin and Rachel Bender, 2 sons-in-law Ben Amosah and Alain Sauve, grandson Kirby Mealing and great-grandson Terell Amosah.  Arts first love was his family.  He started working on the home farm at a very early age in Tavistock, Ont., this led to a career in trucking from coast to coast and the formation of Bender Transport.  Auctioneering began in 1964 in Holstein, Ont. until his last sale in Avonlea in 2009. He also owned a Chrysler dealership in Carnduff from 1984-1989.  Art and Jean founded Chubby’s in Belle Plaine in 1990 where he earned his name ‘Chubby’. They moved to Moose Jaw in 1996.  His name will live on!!  Art loved driving the bus for the Carnduff Red Devils and the Avonlea Arrows to their hockey games.  He was a true entrepreneur – his friendships were many.  A Celebration of Art’s life will be held at the Avonlea United Church on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 1.30 pm.  Marilyn Keerak will officiate. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.  Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday May 10 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home.  The family would like to thank the doctors and the nursing staff on 6F for the wonderful care they provided.  Memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 917 Albert St., Regina, S4R 2P6, or to the Canadian Liver Foundation, Box 1943, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3R2, would be appreciated.  In living memory of Art, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.

Guest Book

Susan McKennitt - Carnduff, SK: Love Yah Dad, Miss you so much, I already do and its only Friday. Were all helping mom , so don't be worrying about her ok. Its was snowing today, so I figured you were ringing your bell at your first Auction Sale up there, Love Sus and Family,

Mel & Marlene Lichty - Stratford, ON: Please accept our condolences on the passing of our cousin Arthur. May God surround you all with His love in very tangible ways during this grieving time. Mel & Marlene (Gerber) Lichty

Bob & Ruth Ann Miller - Mitchell, ON: On behalf of brother Orval and wife Carol, we would like to extend our condolences to Jean & family.  We will treasure our memories of Art.  Orval remarked how he and Art spent a lot of time together while growing up as well as working together and feels they were more like brothers than cousins.  I fondly remember last visiting with Art & Jean at the Gerber reunion in September of 2008.  You have our deepest sympathy in the loss of your husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.

Barb & Jim Roe - Kincardine, ON: "He was a true entrepreneur" how true that is!!!! Always looking for a way to make a buck. I know all about that, as a child 50 years ago I would travel with Art & my dad. Auction sales in southern Ont. Cattle, pigs, machinery whatever looked cheap. Roy & Art liked to eat. Mostly I came along for the food. In the 60's they really liked soft ice cream from Dairy Queen. I have many memories of Art & ice cream. Another food they took to was KFC, we would stop for Kentucky Fried Chicken at every opportunity. Cold cuts, summer sausage, cheese, salami-on & on & on. Another strong memory I have of travelling with those two guys was how bored I got when they would talk & talk & talk. If they where trying to make a deal I didn't think they would ever stop talking. I learned about bullshit at a very early age. Roy & Art sure where full of it!!!! We have lost a real pair of unique characters. They don't make them like that anymore. Art has left a large family & a legacy that will provide tremendous support for Aunt Jean as she continues on without him. So many people appreciated Art's personal qualities, it was a pleasure knowing him.

Byron and  Lori Benson - Moose Jaw, SK: Jean and family: So sorry to hear of Art's passing after just speaking with him the other day. Will talk on Monday eve. Lori and By.

Elaine Bender - Ontario: Hi Jean:  This has been rather a long haul for you and the family members.  One thing I have learned from being a part of this Bender family for 41 years, is that there is a very strong bond and an amazing allegiance to each other.  This has been evident once again, during this challenge for Art and of course the impacts are felt by the rest of the family members.  Although I am not out there with Leon, at this time, my thoughts are very definitely with you all.  I remember Art having a great sense of humour and also how sensitive he was, especially when we would get together when you were both here in Ontario and we would quickly organize a family meal somewhere before you embarked on your journey back home.  It was always a most difficult time to say "goodbye".  Stay strong Jean.  Your children will take care of your every need.  My thoughts and prayers will be with you all tomorrow. Your sister-in-law, Elaine Bender

Walter & Myrna  Gerber - Stratford, ON: Dear Jean, So sorry to hear of Arthurs death. It seems like yesterday that you got married time passes so fast. We were so glad you stopped by the reunion a couple of years ago it was good to see you both. May God be very near you and your family at this time of sorrow. Walter & Myrna Gerber

Don & Terrina Firomski - Belle Plaine, SK: Our Deepest sympathy to Jean and the family. Chubby will be very much missed. Jackie Tatum - Moose Jaw, SK: I love you dad and miss so much and cant wait until we meet again. I just can't believe I will never here your voice again and your laughter when you would talk about old times. I'm so sorry you had to suffer and there was nothing I could do to help you. I will  always hold you close to my heart and in my memories forever. Love Jackie and family

Jackie Tatum - Moose Jaw, SK: If roses grow in heaven, Lord, pick a bunch for me ~ Place them in my Dad's arms & tell him they're from me ~Tell him that I love & miss him & when he turns to smile ~place a kiss upon his cheek & hold him for a while~ Because remembering him is easy ~ I do it everyday ~ There's an ache within my heart that will never go away. I miss you dad very much!!

Keagan Harley Tatum - Moose Jaw SK:

I thought of you with love today,
but that is nothing new.
I thought about you yesterday,
and days before that too.

I think of you in silence,
I often speak your name.
All I have is memories,
and pictures in a frame.

Your memory is a keepsake,
in which I'll never part.
God has you in his keeping,
and I will have you in my heart.

I love you Grandpa and I will keep Grandma from crying. Love Keagan.

Angie Watson - Regina, SK: Thinking of you Jean...aka neighbour, I have missed the visits on the deck and trying to keep up with what Art was up to. Take care.
