Eugene Gordon Gillies

April 28, 1953 – February 3, 2010

Eugene Gordon Gillies aged 56 years, a resident of Extendicare in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan passed into the Lord’s presence on February 3, 2010. A celebration of his life will be held at W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Chapel, 106 Athabasca Street East in Moose Jaw, on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 2:00 pm.  Nairn Gillies will officiate. Gene was born on April 28, 1953 in Moose Jaw.  He was predeceased by his parents Tom and Hilda Gillies, his brother Garth, his niece Megan Gillies and his nephew Bryan Swinamer.  He is lovingly remembered by his sister Marlene (Gary) Swinamer of Calgary, his brother Tom (Phyllis) of Regina, his brother Jim (June) of Guelph and his sister-in-law Doris Sunde of Moose Jaw, as well as by all his nephews, nieces and cousins who loved this very special man.  Gene was a very unique gift to his family.  His Down’s syndrome handicap only enhanced the character of his life.  His innocent and caring heart gave unconditional love to his family, to his care givers and to all those who knew him.  Gene loved music, including singing the old hymns of the faith and he loved singing “O Canada.”  He revelled in the joys of Christmas and made the Christmas celebration a great delight.  Gene spent 20 years of his life at the Valley View Centre in Moose Jaw, followed by a number of years in the Community Living program.  Since 2005, he has been a resident at Extendicare in Moose Jaw.  The family wish to extend their special thanks to the staff at Valley View and to the associated personnel at Community Living for all their efforts in helping Gene cope with every aspect of his life.  The family also wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Extendicare, who have worked hard during his last years to give Gene love, comfort and dignity.  As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Gene’s name to the Saskatchewan Association for Community Living – Saskatoon.  In living memory of Gene, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.
