W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home
Moose Jaw

The Turnbull House
(One of Moose Jaw's Historic Homes)

The corner lot on which W. J. Jones Funeral is located was a birthday gift from the North West Land Company to Ethel Widmere Scott, the first white child born in Moose Jaw. Ethel, the daughter of Ernest Scott, Moose Jaw's first druggist, and his wife Mary, arrived on May 4,1883. In the early 1900's Ethel sold the lot to Dr. A.R. Turnbull, who in 1906 built this red brick and sandstone home with stately ionic pillars. Dr. Turnbull came to Moose Jaw in July 1886. He was one of the first doctors to practice medicine here. This home was described as "The most beautiful residence in Moose Jaw." (The use of the tower was characteristic of the Queen Anne Revival style of architecture). Mrs. Turnbull would put on elaborate teas, entertained by a small orchestra, to which as many as 100 ladies were invited. It became a wish of many ladies in town to be invited to the Turnbull residence. In 1939, the house was sold to William J. Jones to use as a Funeral Home. The exterior of the building was completely restored by the Jones family in 1985. The solid quarter cut oak interior, although modified to accommodate Funeral Home activities, remains in its original stately appearance.

Main Foyer Fireside Room

The oak paneled walls, oak stairs and banisters on the main floor and foyer area of the home have been maintained in their original state. The warmth and richness of the interior remind one of the memories of the many years of history and gives the comfort of a family home. The main floor is used today for private family visitation rooms and quite rooms where family can meet together for family consultations, planning and arranging.

Funeral Chapel

The chapel is constructed of mahogany paneling and open laminated beams giving a presence of warmth and security. The chapel was designed to provide quiet comfort for those attending a funeral service. A up to date technical sound system is used to provide personalized music selections with the use of cassette tape or Cd's as well as a keyboard and organ to allow all types of music selections to be played. As part of our Timeless Tribute memorial presentations our chapel is equipped to display PowerPoint presentations that are professionally produced, combining family photographs with a beautiful background image, text and inspiring music.

The chapel can seat 200 people in the main area, an additional 100 people can be accommodated in the overflow area of the Funeral Home. For very large services we provide an area to allow people to view the service on a video monitor.

The east side of the chapel has a covered concourse which is used for the funeral and family cars. Family members may enter the chapel area privately and conveniently directly to the private family room area.

Paved parking lots to the north and east of the Funeral Home provide for 80 vehicles to proceed to the cemetery services in a orderly departure.
